Dó paper

Giấy dó, một loại giấy truyền thống của Việt Nam, được làm thủ công từ vỏ của những cây dó như dó giấy, dó liệt... Theo một quy trình được truyền lại qua nhiều thế hệ ở một số làng nghề. Đặc tính xốp nhẹ, bền dai của giấy dó bắt nguồn từ chính nguyên liệu, cách chế biến, xử lý và công nghệ sản xuất độc đáo. Cấu trúc dạng sợi của giấy dó tựa như mạng nhện với các xơ sợi li ti cố kết với nhau thành nhiều lớp, không theo thứ tự nhất định mà đa chiều, tạo nên sự khác biệt so với các loại giấy thông thường.

Nhờ vào những ưu điểm vượt trội như độ bền theo thời gian (do không có tính axit), không chứa hóa chất, ít bị mối mọt, ẩm nát, giấy dó được dùng rộng rãi trong mỹ thuật dân gian, đặc biệt là làm giấy điệp cho tranh Đông Hồ, hay lưu giữ các tài liệu quan trọng.

Nhờ sự bền dai, giấy Dó nếu bị cong do cuộn lại hay hơi nhăn trong quá trình sử dụng chỉ cần đặt 1 tờ giấy khác lên vuốt thẳng hoặc đặt vật nặng có bề mặt phẳng như một cuốn sách lên là giấy lại phẳng phiu như ban đầu.

Dó paper, a traditional Vietnamese paper, is handcrafted from the bark of dó trees such as dó giấy (Rhamnoneuron balansae) and dó liệt (Streblus asper). The process has been passed down through generations in several craft villages. The paper's lightweight yet durable nature stems from its unique raw materials, processing methods, treatments, and production techniques.

Dó paper's fibrous structure resembles a spiderweb, with tiny fibers intricately interwoven in multiple layers. This multidirectional, rather than uniform, arrangement distinguishes it from conventional papers.

Thanks to its exceptional qualities, such as its resistance to deterioration over time (due to its acid-free nature), chemical-free composition, and resilience against insects, moisture, and decay, dó paper finds widespread use in folk arts. Notably, it serves as the ideal material for "điệp" paper used in Đông Hồ paintings and for preserving important documents.

Thanks to its durability, if Dó paper gets rolled up or slightly creased during use, you can easily smooth it out by placing another sheet of paper on top and flattening it, or by placing a flat, heavy object like a book on it.
